Chegutu (formerly Hartley) is one of Mashonaland West's key agricultural towns, set amid extensive tobacco, cotton and maize estates. The geology transitions across the district — coarse-grained granite to the north and east gives way to patches of older greenstone belt rock, creating variable borehole conditions. Depths of 40–80 m are typical, with the most productive fracture zones often found along the contact between the two rock types.
