Kariba occupies a dramatic gorge cut through the basement complex of the Zambezi Valley escarpment. The underlying geology is ancient quartzite and granite, cut by numerous northeast-trending faults and fracture zones — exactly the structures that yield reliable borehole water. Aquifer depths typically range from 40–80 m, with the most productive zones often located along the faulted margins of the gorge where groundwater moves freely through open fractures.
